Introduction

After 70 years of repression of Native spiritual and healing traditions, Siberian Native artists are enjoying a new freedom to express this side of their culture through their art. Shamanism represents the deepest and most precious aspect of native Siberian culture. Although among some Siberian ethnicities shamanism was completely stamped out during the Soviet period, in Buryatia it has managed to survive to this day. Now there is a bit of resurgence, and a Buryat Shamans' Association has been formed. Tibetan Buddhism is enjoying a similar revival, and the two traditions coexist today.
